In a rare achievement, Apollo Hospitals, Indore performs the first ‘Day Care -Total Knee Replacement surgery’
The surgery performed using minimally invasive technique had the patient walking back home the same evening
Indore. Apollo Hospitals, Indore part of Asia’ largest and most trusted multi-Speciality chain the Apollo Group of Hospitals, in rare surgical revolution became the first centre in central India to perform Day Care Total Knee Replacement. The cutting edge procedure gave a new lease of life to 52 years old female patient from Indore.
Day Care Total Knee Replacement is a procedure done using minimally invasive technique, which includes tailored approach of patient identification, preparation and post-op care.
Dr. Sunil Rajan, Surgeon and Head of Joint Replacement program at Apollo Hospitals, Indore along with his team performed this ne procedure with a unique three-staged approach. The first and important stage being selection of the right patient.
This begins with screening through a multidisciplinary team led by surgeon, anesthetist, cardiologist, Sports Medicine Specialist and Dietician who post a comprehensive screening through blood test, ECG etc. key’ in the data into a risk assessment into sheet (out-patient Arthroplasty Risk Assessment (AORA) Score and ASA- Physical Status Classification).
Second stage, involves in preparing the patients family and home to manage the patient and assist early recovery. A few modifications were made to the patients home environment which included adjusting bed height, mattress, washroom and sterilizing of the home facility along with training members of the family on use of hand rub, hand-hygiene techniques and patient care.
On the day of surgery patient got admitted at 7 AM in taken to O.T. at 8.30 am. Post-surgery the patients were shifted to recovery. The experienced anesthesia team at Apollo was able to help the patient manage pain, which is a major challenge in complex surgeries – and helped in faster recovery. Post the 4-hour stay period in the recovery the patient came out of walking with the help of walker.
The final stage, at home the patient was assisted by the Apollo team of trained home-care nurse who provided round the clock monitoring supported with traned house-keeping staff, essential lifesaving drugs ect monitored closely the hospital based clinical team.
Talking about the successful surgery Dr. Rajan, shared, while adapting to any change in clinical care pathway ‘Patient Safety’ must never be at risk. This effort was a result of a good planning, team-work and implementation. We are now progressing into a new era of joint replacements on day care basis’
Sharing her experience of undergoing the surgery, Mrs. Duraiya Khambati noted ‘I was so worried before taking the surgery and being hospitalized. But when Dr. Rajan told me I can go home the same day walking with support, I it was just unbelievable.
